There’s absolutely no judgment here when it comes to enjoying more of what you love!

What Exactly is Orzo?

Orzo is a delightful and versatile type of pasta that often confuses people due to its appearance. It’s distinctively shaped like long-grain rice, giving it a unique texture and mouthfeel when cooked. While dry, it might seem small, but once boiled, it plumps up slightly, becoming wonderfully tender. Just like other plain pasta noodles, orzo possesses a very mild flavor, which makes it an excellent canvas for absorbing the delicious flavors of any sauce or ingredients it’s cooked with. Its small size also makes it ideal for dishes where you want the pasta to blend seamlessly with other components, rather than dominate.

Is Orzo the Same as Risotto? Dispelling a Common Myth

No, it’s a common misconception, but Orzo and Risotto are absolutely not the same thing. While they might share a similar appearance when served, they are fundamentally different in their origin, ingredients, and cooking methods. Risotto is a classic, creamy Italian dish traditionally made with a specific type of short-grain rice, such as Arborio, Carnaroli, or Vialone Nano. It requires a slow cooking process, gradually adding rich broth and stirring constantly to release the starches from the rice, creating its signature creamy texture.

On the other hand, Orzo is simply a type of pasta, albeit one uniquely shaped like long-grain rice. It’s made from semolina flour, just like most other pastas, and is typically boiled in water or broth until al dente. While distinct, orzo can be incredibly versatile in the kitchen. In a pinch, it can actually be used as a substitute for Arborio rice in a risotto recipe, offering a pasta-based twist on the classic dish, though the texture will be slightly different.

Essential Ingredients for This Unforgettable Orzo Pasta Recipe

One of the best aspects of this orzo recipe is its relatively short and accessible grocery list. You might even have several of these staples on hand already! For your convenience, a printable recipe card is available below, as always. Let’s delve into what you’ll need to create this comforting masterpiece:

  • Orzo: The star of our dish! This rice-shaped pasta is readily available in most grocery stores, usually found in the pasta aisle alongside other dry pasta varieties.
  • Vegetable or Chicken Broth: This is crucial for infusing flavor directly into the orzo as it cooks. While you can use water in a pinch, broth will significantly enhance the overall taste.
  • Asparagus: Fresh asparagus spears add a wonderful crisp-tender texture and a touch of vibrant green. Look for firm, bright green spears with tight tips.
  • Tomatoes: Grape tomatoes or small heirloom tomatoes are absolutely perfect for this recipe. Roasting them brings out their natural sweetness and creates a burst of juicy flavor in every bite.
  • Boursin Cheese: Specifically, the Garlic and Fine Herb flavored soft Gournay cheese. This is the secret ingredient for unparalleled creaminess and a burst of savory, aromatic flavor. Don’t skip it!
  • Fresh Basil: A handful of fresh basil, chopped just before serving, provides a fragrant, peppery, and sweet finish that brightens the entire dish.
  • Milk: Used to help create the silky-smooth sauce, ensuring everything comes together beautifully. Any milk (dairy or non-dairy) will work, but whole milk will offer the richest texture.
  • Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is non-negotiable! Its pungent aroma and flavor are key to the roasted vegetables and overall dish. Avoid pre-minced jarred garlic for the best results.
  • SO MUCH Parmesan: And we mean SO MUCH! Freshly grated Parmesan cheese is absolutely essential here. We implore you: please, please, use fresh Parmesan from a block, not the preserved, bottled variety. The difference in flavor and melt is truly night and day.
  • Butter: A divine amount of butter adds richness and contributes to the luxurious creamy texture of the sauce.
  • Olive Oil, Salt & Pepper: Staples for roasting the vegetables and seasoning the entire dish to perfection.

Mastering the Art of Cooking Orzo: Simple Steps to Perfection

Cooking orzo is remarkably similar to preparing other types of pasta, making it incredibly easy for even novice cooks to achieve fantastic results. The key is to pay attention to timing and liquid absorption to get that perfect al dente texture. Here are the basic, straightforward instructions for cooking the orzo, integrated with the full recipe to bring this delicious meal to life:

  • Preheat Oven & Heat Broth: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Simultaneously, in a medium to large pot, heat your vegetable or chicken broth until it reaches a gentle simmer. This ensures the orzo starts cooking immediately once added.
  • Roast the Vegetables: While your broth is heating, prepare your asparagus and tomatoes. Toss them with a good drizzle of olive oil and plenty of fresh minced garlic. Spread them evenly on a baking sheet and roast them in the preheated oven for 20-22 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender-crisp and the tomatoes are slightly burst and caramelized. Roasting brings out their natural sweetness and adds a wonderful depth of flavor.
  • Cook the Orzo: Once the broth is simmering, add the orzo pasta directly to the simmering broth. Cook for approximately 7-9 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is al dente and most of the liquid has been absorbed. It’s crucial not to overcook it, as it will continue to absorb liquid and soften slightly after being removed from the heat.
  • Create the Creamy Sauce: Remove the cooked orzo from the heat. Immediately stir in the Boursin (Gournay) cheese, milk, a generous amount of fresh Parmesan cheese, and a divine knob of butter. Stir gently but thoroughly until all the cheeses and butter have melted, creating a smooth, luscious, and incredibly creamy sauce. Taste and season with salt and pepper as desired.
  • Assemble and Serve: Top the creamy orzo with the beautifully roasted asparagus and tomatoes. Don’t be shy – add a liberal amount of fresh basil for its fragrant aroma and vibrant color, and even MORE fresh Parmesan cheese. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Creamy Orzo Every Time

Achieving restaurant-quality creamy orzo at home is surprisingly simple, especially with a few helpful tips:

  • Don’t Overcook the Orzo: Unlike traditional pasta that gets drained, our orzo absorbs the broth. Keep an eye on it and aim for an al dente texture. It will continue to soften slightly after you remove it from the heat and stir in the creamy ingredients. Overcooked orzo can become mushy.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: Fresh garlic, good quality broth, and especially freshly grated Parmesan make a noticeable difference. The Boursin cheese is truly non-negotiable for that signature creamy flavor.
  • Adjust Seasoning: Always taste and adjust salt and pepper at the end. Broths can vary in sodium content, and the Boursin and Parmesan also contribute saltiness.
  • Don’t Skimp on the Cheese and Butter: This recipe embraces richness. The “divine amount of butter” and “loads of Parmesan” are there for a reason – they contribute significantly to the dish’s irresistible creaminess and depth of flavor.
  • Prep Ahead: You can chop your asparagus and tomatoes in advance. You can even roast them slightly ahead of time and gently reheat them before stirring into the hot orzo.

Delicious Variations to Try

This creamy orzo is incredibly versatile, inviting you to experiment with different flavors and ingredients:

  • Add Protein: For a more substantial meal, consider adding cooked chicken (shredded or diced), sautéed shrimp, or crumbled Italian sausage. Stir them in along with the roasted vegetables.
  • Other Vegetables: Feel free to swap or add other quick-cooking vegetables. Spinach or kale can be stirred in at the very end until wilted. Sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or zucchini would also be delicious additions to roast alongside the asparagus and tomatoes.
  • A Zesty Twist: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end can brighten the flavors and add a lovely tang, cutting through the richness beautifully.
  • Different Herbs: While basil is fantastic, fresh parsley or chives can also offer a lovely aromatic touch.
  • Spicy Kick: A pinch of red pepper flakes stirred into the sauce or sprinkled over the top can add a subtle warmth.

Storage and Reheating Made Easy

Leftovers of this creamy orzo are just as delicious, if not more so, the next day! To store, simply transfer any remaining pasta to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, the sauce may have thickened considerably. To bring back its creamy texture, add a few tablespoons of milk (or even a splash of broth) to the pasta in a pot or microwave-safe dish. Stir gently while heating over low heat on the stovetop or in the microwave until it’s warmed through and the desired consistency is achieved. Don’t overheat, as this can make the pasta dry out.

Ingredients

  • 1 pint grape tomatoes
  • 1 lb Asparagus
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons minced garlic
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 8 oz orzo pasta
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 (5.2 oz) box Boursin Garlic and Fine Herbs Gournay Cheese
  • ½ cup fresh parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped

Instructions

For the Asparagus & Tomatoes

  • Preheat the oven to 350F (175°C).
  • On a large baking pan, place the rinsed and trimmed asparagus, grape tomatoes, and minced garlic.
  • Drizzle the vegetables generously with olive oil and toss them to ensure they are evenly coated. Lightly sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender-crisp and the tomatoes are slightly burst and caramelized.

For the Orzo:

  • Meanwhile, prepare the orzo. Add the broth to a medium pot and bring it to a boil. Add the orzo pasta and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it’s al dente and the pasta has completely absorbed the liquid. Be careful not to overcook.
  • Remove the pasta from the heat. To the cooked orzo, add the butter, the entire box of Boursin cheese, grated fresh Parmesan cheese, and milk. Stir everything together gently until all the ingredients have melted and combined smoothly into a rich, creamy sauce.
  • To serve this delightful dish, you can either stir in the roasted asparagus and tomatoes directly into the creamy orzo or artfully place them on top of individual servings of orzo pasta. Finish by adding another sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese and a generous amount of chopped fresh basil for a burst of flavor and color.

Notes

To reheat leftovers, add a few tablespoons of milk or broth, stir well, then heat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until warmed through and creamy again.
